Marksmanship Ribbon To Be Earned 1/24/09 |
| Posted by: KristineL3 on 12/27/2008 00:16 AM (Read: ) |

On Saturday, 1/24/09 the unit will be going to Vancouver Rifle & Pistol to shoot on their indoor range to earn the Marksmanship ribbon.
Permission slips are required. Blank ones can be found at the Sign In/Out table with Ms. Wood. If you've already filled it out at drill on 12/13/08 you're set on this angle.
Rifle Safety classes are also required. YMs are required to attend TWO classes if they were with PLT 53108, PLT 111508, or didn't attend the range in 2007. YMs are required to attend ONE class if they participated in the range in 2007.
Records are kept from year to year as to who has participated in the range each year. We also track the permission slips as well as rifle safety class attendance.
We are offering the rifle safety classes during drill on 1/10/09 as well as each Wednesday Study Night prior to 1/24/09.
Each shooter on the line on qualification day will have an adult standing next to them assisting with their time on the line.
Safety is our #1 concern that entire day. This is our 3rd year running our range time and we've been successful each time!

February 7-8, 2009
Click on "Read More" for a ton more details!!
NOTE: The C.O., X.O., and Mr. Pobi have stipulated that only YMs aged 12+ (any YM turning 12 prior to August 31, 2009) can attend the Snow Trip. There have been several problems in past years with the younger YMs not being properly prepared or emotionally mature enough to handle the cold weather and the elements associated with it.

Operation Island Discovery |
| Posted by: KristineL3 on 01/02/2009 18:23 PM (Read: ) |

We have tentatively scheduled Operation Island Discovery for Sat, August 15, 2009 through Sat, August 22, 2009.
We will be staying aboard NAS Whidbey Island in squad bays and eating our meals in their chow hall.
There will be a cost associated with this unit summer encampment. We anticipate it being around $75-$100 per YM, but it's totally dependent on the fundraising done this spring. Fundraising Accounts (FAs) can be, and are encouraged to be, used.
More details to come once we start locking in our training and activities. |

Winter Weather Wear Regulations |
| Posted by: KristineL3 on 12/09/2008 12:45 PM (Read: ) |

Field jackets are authorized. They are the preferred "winter coat" for the children. Field jackets need patches sewn on them in the exact same format that they have on their cammie blouses (though we do let them wear the field jacket if they've got an order in for patches and haven't received the patches yet). But to be in regulation, the patches all have to be on the field jacket. [NO PATCHES on Goretex field jackets. It breaks the integrity of the jacket.]
Black, grey, or red sweatshirts are authorized for layering warmth UNDER BOTH the red National tee and cammie blouse. These are the ONLY colors authorized by the CO/XO.
Black gloves are authorized.
School coats are not authorized unless there is some huge reason that the kids don't have a field jacket. If that's the case, please contact your child's Adult Platoon Leader and let them know and they will then discuss it with the CO/XO. There are field jackets from time to time for sale in our Supply closet that are pre-worn. Check in with Ms. Wood to see if there are any available. She can be reached at supply{at}lcym.org or 503-997-7766.

PARENT MEETINGS |
| Posted by: KristineL3 on 09/10/2008 11:52 AM (Read: ) |

Parent Meetings continue to be every other month on the first drill of the month beginning at approximately 0815. This is a good time to come find out any new stuff, ask questions, get clarifications, share concerns (constructively), make suggestions, etc.
It's also nice for staff to have a dialogue with the parents to make sure we're all on the same page and we're moving forward for the benefit of the children in our unit. With a unit this size, staff sometimes feels disconnected with the parents and these meetings are a wonderful time for us to meet face to face and get to know one another.
Beginning in November, coffee and pastries will be provided! Yummy!
The meeting dates are as follows:
November 1
January 10, 2009
March 7
May 2
July 11
September 5 (if drill held, otherwise September 19)

About the Young Marines
The Young Marines is the official youth program of the Marine Corps League. Founded in 1958 to promote the mental, moral and physical development of young Americans, the Young Marines offer a variety of activities specifically designed to develop greater self-esteem, discipline and self-confidence in its members.
Character building is one of the most important objectives of the Young Marine program, and all of its activities emphasize the importance of honesty, courage, respect, loyalty, dependability, and a sense of devotion to God, country, community and family.
In July of 1993, the United States Marine Corps officially designated the Young Marines program as “the focal organization for fulfilling its participation in the Department of Defense’s drug demand reduction activities.”
Young Marines make a pledge to maintain a drug free lifestyle and are encouraged to influence family, friends, and schoolmates to share this commitment.
