Veterans Day, a day to honor all who served
The History of Veteran's Day
The annual recognition of Veterans Day on November 11 goes back to 1919, when it was referred to as Armistice Day.

That day was the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I. The war concluded when an armistice, or a temporary cease of all aggressions, was implemented. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the holiday with these words:

"To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The following year, both France and the United Kingdom observed services, on the same day, for those unknown who died in the war. A year later, the U.S. held a similar ceremony, as Congress approved legislation for a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, to be placed in Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1926, Congress enacted a resolution, requesting the President to observe Armistice Day on an annual basis, which the President issued. In 1938, it became a legal Federal holiday, since the states retained the right to designate their own individual holidays.

On June 1, 1954, after both World War II and the Korean War produced millions of new war veterans, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

As part of the Fourth Monday Law established in 1968, Congress designated the observance of Veterans Day on the fourth Sunday of October. However, most states chose to acknowledge Veterans Day as it originally was on November 11. As a result, in 1975, Congress formally changed the Federal observation of Veterans Day to November 11, and it would take effect in 1978.

The National Veterans Day Ceremony takes place at Arlington National Cemetery every November 11 at 11:00am. Each of America's military services create a combined color guard and honors those who died in war by executing 'Present Arms' at the Tomb of the Unknowns, or those 'known but to God.' The President then lays a wreath at the tomb while 'Taps' is played by a bugler. The remainder of the ceremony takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater.

Veterans Day is celebrated November 11.

Upcoming Veterans Day Events - 2009
Hello!!

We've got three (3) upcoming Veterans Day Events that I wanted to remind you about. The Veterans Dinner and the Veterans Convoy are optional attendance, though we'd like to encourage as many YMs as possible to take part in these events. THE VETERANS PARADE IS MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. There is a ribbon that can be earned for participation in the Veterans Day activities being offered by our unit. The Awards Manual dictates that a Young Marine has to have participated in 80% of the unit's activities to be eligible for the ribbon. The C.O. has defined this to be two out of our three offered activities. If we add more activities as we get closer to time then the amount required for earning the ribbon will be adjusted. Stay tuned!!

#1 -- Veterans Hwy Run.
This will be Sunday, November 9th. We'll be meeting at the Elks Lodge at 0845. We'll be going over to the Clark County Fairgrounds and parking in the lot. There will be a Veterans Appreciation Ceremony beginning at 1100. At noon, the convoy will snake out of the Clark County Fairgrounds and will proceed down I-205 all the way to where it meets I-5 down near Wilsonville. From there our unit will proceed to the Korean War Memorial in Wilsonville to visit that. Our unit will eat chow together. We anticipate returning to the Elks Lodge at 1500-ish.

Any recruits and/or families that would like to come along with and participate in this event are welcome to join us! Just be sure to meet us at the Elks Lodge {at} 0845 so we can travel together to the Clark County Fairgrounds. We have to enter together (in a line) in order to park together - hence exiting the Fairgrounds together. You also need to at a minimum fly an American flag from your vehicle as you travel down I-205.

The Uniform of the Day will be Cammie Alphas (= with ribbons).
#2 -- Veterans Dinner - Elks Lodge #823.
This will be Tuesday, November 10th. Our unit participated in this the last three years as well. Our Young Marines, staff, recruits, and any parents interested in assisting will be serving dinner to the veterans that attend the Elks' Veterans Dinner.

Uniform of the Day will be Cammie Alphas (= with ribbons).

Please plan on meeting at the Elks Lodge at 1715 (or as soon as you can get there after work).

Young Marines, staff, recruits, and families are invited to participate in the Veteran's Dinner at no cost.
#3 -- Vancouver Veterans Parade - MANDATORY!!!!
This will be Saturday, November 7th. This is an annual parade we have been participating in since 2003. We'll be meeting at the Elks Lodge {at} 0845 and will head over to the parade route in our unit bus. The parade steps off at 1100 and runs from Officers Row working its way into downtown Vancouver. We disband at Esther Short Park. We anticipate a return to the Elks Lodge at around 1300-ish. Please stay tuned for specific details as we get closer to time.

Uniform of the Day will be Cammie Alphas (= with ribbons) and field jackets.
