Testing Policy
Written permission (on a "Permission Chit") from the YM’s Platoon Sergeant, the YM's Platoon Leader, and the YM’s Adult Platoon Leader. [Platoon Leaders are the Young Marines in charge of each platoon and the Adult Platoon Leaders are the adult staff in charge of each platoon.]
This is supposed to be driven by the Young Marine him or herself, NOT the YM’s parent(s). It is the YM’s responsibility to let their Platoon Sgt and Platoon Leader know they feel they are ready to test for the next rank.
Once permission is granted, promotion tests can be taken any Wednesday night between 1900-2100 or during normal drill hours. If testing on a Wednesday night, please pre-arrange it with Gunny Hudson and your Platoon Leader so that the appropriate tests are on site and available. You will need to bring your "Permission Chit" and turn it in to Gunny Hudson.

Oral Board Policy
Once a YM passes a test, Gunny Hudson prepares the information for Mrs. Lewis, Adjutant and makes her aware of the passing score.
Either Gunny Hudson or Mrs. Lewis passes out a Progress Report (to be filled out by the YM’s teacher(s), parent, and themselves) and a Platoon Commander’s Leadership Evaluation form. Each form needs to be filled out PRIOR to the oral board.
The YM is placed at the bottom of the list of YMs waiting for an Oral Board. The YMs are placed on the list in test date order. If multiple YMs test on a particular day, then the YMs are placed on the list in the order of their score on the test (highest score being placed at the top down to the lowest score that day). If two or more YMs receive the exact same score on the same test day, then the YM who has been holding the current rank longest will be placed first on the Oral Board list.
The Oral Board committee consists of: The XO (president of the committee), Miss Lewis, and Gunny Brinton and the highest ranking Young Marine available. If either Gunny Brinton or Miss Lewis cannot be present for an oral board for whatever reason, the substitutes on the Oral Board are Mr. Freeman and Mrs. Martin. [Per the rules set forth by our National Headquarters, the XO can never be absent from an Oral Board. His attendance is required in order to proceed.] LCYM attempts to maintain a similar standard across all Oral Boards and so therefore operates with a set committee on the Oral Board. We have found it removes many of the outside variables that having multiple people sit on Oral Boards creates as well as maintains a high level of continuity.
Once a YM takes his/her Oral Board, the president of the Oral Board committee sends forth the results of the Oral Board to the UC The UC then either adds his approval to the findings of the Oral Board committee or he overturns the findings.
When a YM passes his Oral Board and receives the recommendation of the UC for promotion, they shall be promoted the 1st calendar day of the following month. The YM will then go through the “pinning ceremony” at morning formation of the 1st drill of their promotion month. [For example, a YM takes and passes his Oral Board on September 15th. Their promotion will take affect on October 1st and they will be pinned at the first drill of the following month at morning formation.]
Oral Boards are scheduled by the Adjutant Mrs. Lewis based on the personal schedules of all committee members and the need of an Oral Board (are there YMs on the list waiting?). Oral Boards are generally scheduled for Wednesday evenings, during study nights. In extreme circumstances (travel concerns), Oral Boards can be scheduled during normal drill days. However, we attempt to avoid that at all costs so YMs aren’t missing valuable training time.
